Designer of schaf

Mari Shimizu

Q1. What does your brand name mean?

"schaf" means "sheep" in German. Originally, I was making accessaries made by crocheting lace yarn so I chose the word from something about yarn. Also, since my father is a pastor, I wanted to include my identity so I used "sheep" which is often quoted in a bible. These days, I changed the material from yarn to plants.

Q2. Please describe your production process.

Depends on the productions, I make the mold by myself. I also grow a plant which becomes the material for the production. After the plant grew up, I make the dried flowers and pressed flowers. Then, I add resign carefully on it and make it harder or put the resign and plants in the mold and it becomes an accessory.

Q3. Why did you decide to use plants as your main material?

Since my mother liked gardening and planting herbs, they were always around me and I liked them too. I wanted to wear my favorite plants as a jewelry. That's why I decided to use plants.

Q4. What part of your artworks do you want the customers to pay attention to?

Even they are the same kind of plants, each one is unique and nothing is the same.  The preserved flowers kept the shape when they were blooming in the resign. I hope you can find the beauty of the veins of a leaf and tiny portals.

Q5. Lastly, please share some comments to customers at the ARCADE JAPAN.
