Q1. What Made You Decide To Establish Your Own Brand? What Is Meaning Of Brand Name?
ブランド設立のきっかけは何ですか？また、ブランド名の意味を教えてください。
I have loved making things since I was a child, and had been making accessories and miscellaneous goods before becoming involved in my current approach. When I was thinking about whether I could make my own unique creations, I happened to have some wire and pliers in my room and made hand shapes and simple letters, which led me to start the brand.
The brand name "iki" is derived from the designer's name, and "iki" is a Japanese word with various meanings such as "chic," "breath," and "design," in addition to having a nice sound.
幼い頃からものづくりが好きで、現在の手法になる前からアクセサリーや雑貨を作っていました。自分だけのユニークな作品を作れないかと考えていたとき、たまたま部屋にあった針金とペンチを使って手の形や簡単な文字を作ってみたことが、ブランドを始めるきっかけとなりました。
ブランド名「iki」はデザイナーの名前に由来しているのですが、響きの良さに加え「粋」「息」「意企」など、さまざまな意味を持つ日本語として魅力を感じ名づけました。
Q2. Please Describe Your Production Process.
商品はどのような工程を経て出来上がるのでしょうか？
A single piece of wire is bent with a pair of pliers to form the edges of the letters and motifs. I do not use drafts or molds, and each piece is made by hand, one by one.
1本の針金をペンチ1つで曲げて、文字やモチーフを縁取るように表現しています。下書きや型などは無く、全ての作品を1点1点フリーハンドの手作業で作っています。Instagram等に制作過程の動画を載せているので見て頂けると嬉しいです。
Q3. What Made You Interested In NY Market?
ニューヨーク市場に興味を持った理由は何ですか？
Since I make many works using hiragana and kanji, I wondered if overseas customers would be pleased with them... so it was difficult for me to act on my own. I am truly honored to be able to exhibit in New York this time through the Arcade Japan. It is like a dream come true to be able to show my work to so many people in this wonderful place where so many different sensibilities come together!
ひらがなや漢字を用いた作品を多く作っているため、海外のお客様にも喜んでいただけるのかな…と漠然と思ってはいたのですが、個人で動くことはなかなか難しく行動に移せずにいました。今回、the Arcade Japanさんを通じてニューヨークでの出展が叶い、本当に光栄です。様々な感性が集まる素晴らしい場所で、ikiの作品をたくさんの方に見て頂けるなんて夢のようです！
Q4.Which One Is Your Favorite Piece? And Why?
イチオシはどの商品ですか？又その理由は？
The Kanji (Chinese character) accessory made with gradation-colored wire is one of my favorites. Among iki's works, which are usually in simple shades, I think it is one that pops out and catches the eye.
グラデーションカラーの針金で作った漢字のアクセサリーがイチオシです。シンプルな色合いが多いiki作品の中で、一際ポップで目を引く一品になっていると思います。

Thank you for taking notice of iki's accessories! I never dreamed that the day would come when everyone in New York would be able to see and hold my work. I hope from Japan that many people will enjoy them. No two pieces are exactly alike, as each piece has a different design texture, even with the same characters and motifs. May you have a wonderful encounter of a lifetime!
