Q1. What made you decide to establish your own brand?

I am an illustrator, and I draw based on my motto, which is, “to make women’s daily lives a little happier”. When I first started my own brand, I realized most of my work were on print media, such as magazines and books. Then I thought I wanted to make items that can stand closer to women’s lives, so I started making original tenugui (Japanese towel) for exhibitions. ‘etocoto’ means 3 things. ‘e to koto (means picture and thing)’, ‘eto no koto (eto is the name of the designer, and no koto means someone’s thing)’, and ‘tocotoco (means walk slow) with my own pace’.

Q2. Please describe your production process.

According to the inspiration I get at that time, I write the ideas on a note. By imagining the story that will be the background of the drawing, coloring and searching for domestic factories to order samples, I make the the products. It’s both fun and difficult to think about matching ideas and actual papers, ink, cloth, dying and where to put the focus on. In case of tenugui, based on the idea sketch,I draw the design with only black. While discussing dying, coloring and cloth with the craftsmen, I finish the products .

Q3. What made you interested in NY market?

I simply thought it would be very fun. Also, I am interested in how people who aren’t around me will perceive my products. I like English too so I thought I can finally make use of it. And I liked the concept of the ARCADE JAPAN.

シンプルに面白そう!と感じたから。また、普段身の回りにいない人々にどんな反応があるのか興味があるし、英語も好きなのでやっと生かせそうだなと。あとはthe ARCADE JAPANのコンセプトが気に入ったからです。

. Q4. Where do you get inspiration of your design from?

4 seasons in Japan, the view of the nature, and memories from my childhood. Now, I live with my 7 year old son and a cat. Sometimes what my son says give me inspiration because they are something I myself would never come up and say.

Q5. Lastly, please share some comments to customers at the ARCADE JAPAN.
