Q1. What made you decide to establish your own brand?

I originally engaged in my family business for 8 years, which is producing Washi (Japansese traditional paper) for temples and shrines. Meanwhile, I noticed that Washi industry, one of the traditional industry, is going downhill. The demand is decreasing, cheap western papers are taking over the industry, craftsmen are aging and there is no one to take over... There are many problems. Today, Washi has become something you don't touch everyday, but it still is one of the Japanese traditional industry. Washi doesn't only far more firm and warm texture than western papers, but also easy to process the way craftsman wants. Based on this potential, in order to create the new circle of demand and suppy and to preserve the value, technique and tradition that handcrafted Washi has, I established the brand 'ARATA'.

Q2. Please describe your production process.

I ask the craftsmen to make Washi of 100% paper mulberry (material of Washi), hand-dye it, finish it with the unique 3 dimentional molding. It takes 2-3 years to complete the molding, and it is a top secret. Jewelries of ARATA are waterproof due to the unique coating, so you don't have to worry about water and sweat. Except for the process of making paper, the whole production process is done in my atelier.

Q3. What made you interested in NY market?

I am interested in how my jewelries will be perceived in New York, and also have always wanted to challenge in a different market.

Q4. What do you think is the most fascinating aspect of Washi (Japanese traditional paper)?

It is the light, firm, warm, and gentle texture. Also the fact that Washi was invented in Asuka Era (in 610), and still is in people's lives. It's old but also new.

Q5. Lastly, please share some comments to customers at the ARCADE JAPAN.

Nice to meet you and thank you for sharing your time to take a look at my jewelries. ARATA is a jewelry brand from Kyoto, Japan, that fuses new ideas and designs into Washi. Based on the concept "transform the potential of Washi into something new", I always think about what Washi can do and what only Washi can do, and transform the blessing of nature into jewelries. Please take in in your hand and experience the Washi jewelries.
